Position: Human Trafficking Outreach Intern

Location: Santa Rosa, CA

Reports To: Lead Human Trafficking Caseworker

Status: Nonexempt, part time (20-22 hours/week)

Salary: $17.50/hour

 

Summary: Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting victims of sexual assault, human trafficking, rape and other trauma caused by sexual violence. The outreach interns will be charged with providing on the ground outreach to people who have experienced sex or labor trafficking/exploitation throughout Sonoma County. Led by the team of human trafficking experts at Verity, these interns will be working to connect survivors with the organization to receive the support and intervention that they deserve to realize safety and healing.

 

This is a grant funded position, with funds currently available until the end of March 2025. Verity is hopeful that the funding will be extended beyond that point, but that is not guaranteed.

 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Initial contact with clients
    • Provide in-person and telephone crisis intervention
    • Support on the 24/7 crisis line
  • Community outreach and engagement
    • Work with partner agencies and staff to identify strategic outreach opportunities that will be likely to reach survivors of human trafficking
  • Provide immediate resources to support people in getting to the next step of their healing or safety journey
  • Represent the agency as a public speaker, prevention educator, trainer, or other community relation roles as assigned 
  • Provide a high level of empathy and patience when working with vulnerable populations.
  • Assist with volunteer training, as needed
  • Lead or assist in the implementation of support groups for survivors, as needed.

 

Administrative

  • Attend organizational and partner meetings, as needed
  • Promptly complete reports, data input, and other paperwork as required by the organization and grant deliverables.
  • Adhere to all Verity personnel policies and protocols 
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as required

 

Competencies

  • Ability to maintain a high level of client confidentiality 
  • Proficiency with Google Suite and Microsoft Office 
  • Must be a self-starter who can work in a team environment and handle a variety of tasks with urgent deadlines 

 

Education and Skills 

  • State certification within three years, in current standing, as a sexual assault counselor/advocate. If not certified, candidate must be able to complete Verity’s Crisis Line Counselor training 
  • Lived experience with human trafficking considered an asset to this role
  • Fluent in Spanish and English preferred
  • Offer of position is contingent upon completion of Family Justice Center Sonoma County background check and DOJ fingerprint check

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to work at a desk/computer in a shared workspace for several hours at a time; bending and/or lifting up to 20 pounds, grasping; capacity to navigate two-story building via stairs; specific vision abilities include close and peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment; work environment represents those an employee encounters while working in an office workspace environment, attending a tabling public event, other outreach project sites and presentations. Additional specific physical demands may include:

 

  • Carry essential materials for tabling and outreach projects, including a canopy, chairs, tables, pamphlets, prizes/swag, a tablecloth and emergency supplies for clients.

Travel
Travel is primarily local during the business day; reliable transportation is required; ability to use personal vehicles for work-related errands.
