We are hiring a Veterans Peer Specialist!

JOB TITLE: Veterans Peer Specialist  
HOURS: This position is 40 hours/week.
SALARY:  Starts at $22.50 per hour / raise to 23 after 90 days.
REPORTS TO: Crisis Intervention Manager



Under contract with Verity, Sonoma County’s Rape Crisis Center, this independent contractor position will primarily focus on a comprehensive outreach program throughout the Sonoma County veteran community.  Specifically served will be those vulnerable populations (veterans and their dependents) that would otherwise be unable to visit the main Veterans Service Office.  There will also be an emphasis on identifying individuals who have experienced Military Sexual Trauma and supporting them in receiving appropriate services including Verity’s therapist for veterans and provide ongoing follow-up for all clients served. Additionally, the Veteran Peer Specialist will coordinate with Verity’s therapist on clients receiving therapy at Verity to encourage a coordinated system of care.



The ideal candidate will be an honorably discharged (as defined by the California Military and Veterans Code) veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, and will possess:

  • The ability to effectively communicate and advocate for clients experiencing a wide range of emotional states, including grief, anger, fear, resentment, and mistrust.
  • An understanding of Federal, State, local and non-profit programs and benefits available to veterans and dependents.
  • Case management and research skills and ability to work independently in less than ideal locations and situations while always maintaining client confidentiality.
  • The ability to use a computer and the internet for research and data entry and processing.
  • Aptitude for conducting effective, trauma-informed interviews to determine client needs, objectives, and goals.


Education and Experience: Any combination of education, training, and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. Extensive local knowledge of agencies and programs that can benefit veterans is highly desired.

Mandatory Training: Ability to complete 40+ hour Sexual Assault Counselor training provided by Verity, to begin at time of hire.

License: Possession of a valid driver’s license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.



Knowledge of: the methods and techniques of conducting an assessment interview; veterans’ benefits; the functions, programs, and services of the VA, veterans’ groups, and community resources; problem solving techniques; techniques and standards of case administration;  mathematical computations; medical terminology; modern office methods and procedures; database, spreadsheet, and word-processing applications.

Ability to: read, understand, gather, record, retain, and learn to interpret the large volumes of diverse information required to advise clients on eligibility for a variety of veterans’ benefits; communicate both in writing and orally with persons from varied socio-economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds; learn to conduct and conduct effective assessment interviews; exercise sound judgment within general policy and regulatory guidelines; set work priorities and effectively utilize time to ensure timely completion of assigned tasks; establish and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders; learn to work independently and coordinate the compilation of information and evidence required to establish veterans’ benefit eligibility; use and understand common database, spreadsheet, and word processing applications; conduct internet searches; prepare clear and comprehensive reports and records; establish and maintain systematic records.
