North Bay Women in Music Benefit for Verity

We are very excited to be one of two beneficiaries of an upcoming awesome weekend of music! Read more about this upcoming event online and buy your tickets here and get more information from the Facebook event! Read on for excerpts from an excellent article in the Press Democrat:

“From the #MeToo movement to the Women’s March to TIME magazine naming the Silence Breakers who spoke out against sexual assault and harassment “Person of the Year” for 2017, women are more in the forefront of public discussion and debate than ever.

One arena where women have gained an increasingly powerful voice is the music business. Contemporary singers Beyonce and Lorde, for example, have established an image of both strength and independence, following the tradition of pioneering women music stars like Carole King and Aretha Franklin.

Next weekend, the Rohnert Park-based North Bay Women in Music Collective will gather some of Northern California’s most respected longtime women musicians — including soul and blues singer Lydia Pense, guitarist Nina Gerber and boogie pianist Wendy DeWitt — for the inaugural Women in Music weekend.

The Women in Music weekend opens April 20 with the concert at the Arlene Francis Center in Santa Rosa, followed April 21 by a seminar and music showcase at Prairie Sun Recording in Cotati.

Money raised by the events will benefit Verity, a Santa Rosa community organization that provides services to victims of all forms of sexual violence regardless of gender or age, and to the Ron Martin Memorial Foundation to support music education, said the weekend’s organizer, Mandy Brooks of North Bay Women in Music Collective.”

Verity is so grateful to be a part of such a wonderful community that is passionate about ending sexual violence and exploitation! See you on 4/20!

Sol Horizon with Lungs and Limbs: a SAAM fundraiser for Verity!

Verity, Sonoma County’s sole rape crisis center, is throwing an end-of-the-month event: Celebrating Survivors! This fantastic bash is made possible in huge part because of the folks at Lagunitas Brewing Co and Second Octave, a local entertainment enterprise, for donating their time and talents to help us put on the event.

Survivors of sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, and rape experience a great deal. Verity is there for all survivors and their families who want our support. We want to take a night to Celebrate Survivors and advocates, and to encourage community support in whatever form it takes! We appreciate all of the ways that our community supports survivors. We want to celebrate the survivors who are a part of our community! All money raised from admissions and raffle ticket sales go directly to Verity. All money from beer sales at this Lagunitas-based event will also go to Verity, with all the proceeds from wine sales also coming our way! We will also be accepting any and all donations throughout the course of Sexual Assault Awareness Month; all donations will be used to augment Verity programs.

Voted “Best World/Reggae band” in the North Bay Area, Sol Horizon seamlessly fuses roots reggae with rock, funk, and world music stylings. Anchored by veteran musicians, Sol is renowned for energetic live performances and their lyrical content, which centers on themes of peace, community, sustainability and the re-vitalizing power of nature. The band moves feet and inspires minds, creating a positive musical experience that continues to attract fans from across the globe.

Lungs and Limbs are an alt pop band from the San Francisco Bay Area. Known for their thick, hip-hop-and-80’s-inspired beats, cowboy guitar licks and hook-laden vocals, the quartet’s debut EP Lifelike (2015), written and recorded in a horse stable, garnered positive press from critics in the Bay Area, Boston, LA, Germany and beyond. Do the Bay describes Lungs and Limbs as “…a tight, clean sound that is refreshing to hear in a sea of lo-fi garage rock that seems to sometimes dominate the local music scene in SF.”

Verity’s mission:
We, the people of Verity, working in cooperation with the community, strive to eliminate all forms of violence, with a special focus on sexual assault and abuse. Sexual assault is an unacceptable form of oppression, which is destructive to the lives of the survivors, their families, and their friends. Verity facilitates healing and promotes the prevention of violence by providing counseling, advocacy, intervention, and education in our community. We support social justice and equality for all adults and children who have been sexually assaulted. We are committed to ending sexual violence by working to eliminate the conditions that cause or tolerate it. We realize that the process to end the violence in our communities includes a collaboration of individuals, groups, and organizations. We are an active partner in that effort as a member of the community.

Verity was founded in 1974 as Women Against Rape, a grassroots organization for those traumatized by the rape of women. The agency included a phone number that women and survivors of assault could call for emotional support. Our crisis line is still the only one of its kind in Sonoma County, and it operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Today Verity is managed by a Board of Directors numbering up to 12, with daily activities performed by an 18 person staff and a volunteer base of 60 plus active members. We cannot do this alone, so please come out and support us and celebrate the hard work of our volunteers and staff as you Celebrate Survivors!

If you can’t make the event, please feel free to donate online at to help us continue to support survivors.

Verity’s second annual fundraising breakfast is able to happen in large part because of the support of our amazing sponsors and the hard work of our Board of Directors.

As you know, Verity’s goal is to end sexual violence.  As a community partner and a supporter of our mission, you understand how critical it is for all of us to make the commitment that sexual violence, and all forms of violence, will not be tolerated. We are all community agents of change.  We know that with your help we will eliminate sexual violence in our generation.  On November 3rd  we will come together in solidarity as we raise our voices in a toast to all who have been impacted by sexual violence for their strength and their healing for they are our community’s heroes. We want these women, men, children and youth to know that we are passionate about making the world better and safer for each of them. Together we will move toward a bright future for Verity and our community so that we can continue to provide services that promote safe, compassionate, and supportive healing.
